This is one of the best historical fiction novels I have ever read. The story is not only engaging, it is intriguing and gives real insight into the life and times of a family just after WW I and through WW II. Ms. Grainger has a knack for developing her characters and in so doing she takes the reader on their individual journeys of self discovery and growth. I very much like Ms. Grainer's style of writing. Her descriptions of the countryside, the times, the apparel, the settings are so detailed I feel as if I am a part of the story. I shall continue to seek out Ms. Grainger's books in hopes they are all as good as this one.

When a book can hold my interest for long periods and make me want more at the end, then I consider it a "good read." Historical fiction is my preferred genre, and this story delivered it all. WWII, Ireland, love stories, intrigue, all in there. It was full of misspelled words, but the story ultimately rose above that and held my interest throughout. I had read "The Tour" by Ms. Grainger and enjoyed it, but this one is superior by far.

Early protagonist Dr. Richard Buckley survives The Great War, but as with present day PTSD, not without scars--visible or not. He has seen far more than he ever wanted and it still tears him up. His wife, Edith, bears twins James and Juliet, the latter of whom is spirited enough for both she and her much more reticent twin, James. Dr. Buckley is sickened at heart, but tries to take his place in his beloved Dunderrig, (West Cork) Ireland to serve as physician. He has brought with him the French bride, Solange Allingham, widow of his best friend, with whom he'd made a pack to care for the other's family in the event of the death of either of them. The good doctor's wife is beyond bored with the town and their way of life and is really not interested in raising the twins. The duty and pleasure falls to Solange as she takes on the role of nanny. The story follows the twins as they become the protagonists, maturing into the second world war. The artistic James follows his path rediscovering his birth mother, while his sister follows hers--right smack into the heart of the action in Europe. The characters are fleshed out enough that you rejoice with their triumphs and weep with their sorrows. The book is extremely compelling; impossible to put down, taking you through all the emotions including anger at Edith, who is more savagely political than clever. Poignant plot, beautifully fleshed out characters, suspenseful; the book could have been a perfect 5 stars had it enjoyed the services of an additional editor--so I'll have to downgrade to 4 1/2 stars--rounded up. I downloaded this book free from BookBub, so glad I did. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a good book, historical or otherwise.

Love of one's country, of family, of one's profession. Love between friends, between twins. Love of one's parents as well as those persons who become as close as parents or grandparents. Everyday life comes to life in a highly charged historical era. Grainger's story tells how one extended family endures living in Ireland and beyond during the aftermath of World War I and through World War II. Very realistic portrayal of "normal everyday people" who sometimes do very heroic things for their family, friends and country. A unique and wonderful historical romance! (No explicit sex scenes, though premarital sex is mentioned.) I really enjoyed reading this book.

When Dr. Richard Buckley returned to him home in Dunderrig after service in France in WWI, he was disillusioned with war and only wanted to be with his family. Returning with him was Solange Allingham, the widow of his best friend. Unfortunately, Buckley’s wife, Edith, bitter at him for serving in the British Army, sworn enemies of the nationalist Irish, becomes even more withdrawn after the birth of twins, James and Juliet, leaving them to Solange’s care. Eventually, Edith leaves him and goes to Dublin where she eventually marries a German national, despite never having officially divorcing. The twins grow up under Solange’s care, considering her more their mother than the woman who gave birth to them. As the world enters the horror unleashed by the rise of Hitler in Germany, the twins grow into adulthood and their lives take divergent paths—paths that threaten the unity of the Buckley family. So Much Owed by Jean Grainger is a stirring tale of the horrors of war and its impact on one family during a time of cataclysmic change. It reveals the depths of human emotion; love, betrayal, loyalty, and bravery in a way that most novels only touch on sketchily. The author takes a reader into the hearts and minds of the characters in such a way you come away feeling as if you know them as well as your next door neighbor—or best friend. This is s book that will bring tears to your eyes while at the same time leave you with a warm feeling in your heart.

Don't you just love a book that places you right there in the scenes with the characters like a fly on the wall? SO MUCH OWED by Jean Grainger accomplishes just that. Grainger begins by placing the reader at the end of World War I as British-enlisted Dr. Richard Buckley finally gets to return home to Dunderrig in Ireland, exhausted and disgusted with war and all that it entails. He is honor-bound to also take home his best friend's widow, French nurse Solange Allingham; Buckley had promised Jeremy if something happened to him, he'd see she wasn't alone. But what will Richard's less-than-adoring wife think of their houseguest? This marvelous story begins in WWI's 1919 and moves through 1943 into WWII. You'll come to know the Buckley family of Dunderrig intimately as if they were next-door neighbors, following their children into adulthood and the parts they play on the world scene. There are some very suspenseful, exciting pages that will keep you reading regardless of what's about to boil over on the stove! The Irish setting is unusual for a WWII novel, and you will learn a good deal from this historical fiction. This is one interesting book! I loved it from first page to last and will surely read more of Jean Grainger's work.
