My son has a severe allergy to eggs, dairy, peanuts and tree nuts and now the possibility of celiac disease has been established. I am always on the look out for new recipes that are easy, fun, and have reasonable substitutes. I love this book, the recipes are great, my son can help me make a lot of what I have found in this and I don't have to empty the bank just to satisfy the ingredient lists!! It is tough to expand my son's menu when he has so many allergies to foods that are in EVERYTHING but this is one of the better cook books I have found. I HIGHLY recommend this to parents of allergic children or even families looking for fun recipes to make together.

great book. picked it up about 18yr ago for my autistic child. after 3 years of no dairy, no gluten, no sugar...my son reached out verbally trying hard to express what he wanted on 9/11. the recipes led my thru the 3 yrs. you may not have the blessing that I got on 9/11 and you may use the recipes that will hopefully be helpful.

If you are trying to avoid wheat or gluten, this book is not the best choice. The recipes appear to be designed using wheat flour, with gluten-free substitutions listed below each. If you have any experience with gluten-free baking, you know that simply substituting a different kind of flour is often not enough. So far, the recipes I have tried have not turned out very well, and I have had more luck adapting old recipes that are not intended for people with food allergies. This book might be helpful if you are just starting out trying to provide foods for a child with food allergies, and are having trouble coming up with ideas. Otherwise, your money would be better spent on a book by Bette Hagman or Carol Fenster.

I really like this book. It helps with preparing foods for the sensitive children in your life. It does say soy milk so we replace that with either raw cows milk or goat milk. I'm very thankful someone took their time to make this book for those of us searching!

Reviewed by Tammy Petty Conrad for Reader Views (4/07)The cover shouts that this will be a fun cookbook to use, as well as a practical one. Imagine the families who have children with allergies or special dietary needs. It must be frustrating to try to adapt recipes for every meal on a regular basis. The authors of this book have done all the work for those parents. At the same time, they've created a book that anyone with kids will enjoy cooking with. The authors start with a little background about how many suffer from food allergies and the type of symptoms which can occur. For us lucky parents who don't have to deal with this, it is eye-opening to consider how careful other parents have to be with every single thing that goes into their children's mouths. The authors are experienced chefs and educators who are adept at sharing information without boring their readers. This book is not just about recipes, but nutrition as well, including appropriate substitutions for each possible culprit in the pantry.Recipes are included for every meal as well as snacks, desserts and drinks. Through a combination of pictures, each recipe notes what substitutes can be made for potential allergens like dairy, gluten and eggs. A complete nutritional guide is also included. My son was eager to try the corn dogs, his favorite menu choice at the fine dining establishments we frequent. The recipes are printed in an easy-to-read format so children can use it as well as adults. This was my first attempt at making corn dogs however, and I found it difficult to wrap the hot dog pieces in the dough. It could be that my cornmeal was not ground fine enough. They tasted good even if they weren't restaurant quality! Our next attempt was the Sticky Cinnamon Buns which required the Biscuit Dough recipe too. While I wouldn't attempt this on a weekday morning, I didn't mind rolling out the dough on a lazy Saturday afternoon for my Sunday breakfast. Next we'd like to try Pizza Soup and Pancake Paint. You'll have to buy the book if you want to know what to do with the paint!Todd Adelman and Jodi Behrend also included an extensive resource list in the back for parents to look up more information for their children's issues. I would recommend "Special Foods for Special Kids" to anyone with children or food allergies. You never know when you might have one of your children's friends over who is allergic to gluten. Or you have to take cupcakes to school and you can't include peanuts. Keep this cookbook handy and refer to it often. Remember there is always something cooking in the kitchen, but it doesn't have to make your children sick.Book received free of charge.

If your child has a food allergy, this is not a cookbook I would recommend. It seems to me the authors went through some other cookbook, picking out recipes that sounded like foods kids would like. All they did to call it a book for kids with allergies is list in what you could substitute when a dairy product, eggs, or wheat is listed which is not particularly user-friendly. There is also a danger in that whenever cheese is listed as an ingredient, they simply tell you to substitute "non-dairy cheese." While it does exist, it is not always easy to find and you have to be really careful because most of the so called lactose or dairy free cheeses contain "casein" which is a milk protein-dangerous dangerous dangerous for a milk-allergic child! (I know from experience as my 16 month old has a severe dairy and egg allergy.) You would be much better off with the book by Coss or the one put out by the Food Allergy Network.

I have found the book to be an excellent resource and cookbook for adults with food allergies as well as for children. While the recipes selected were targeted at the types of food that children like and the types of food that children want to eat to be like other childen, I have found recipes in this book that work well for adults with various food problems. My grown daughter has delevoped an allergy to gluten products recently, (she's in her early 40's) and she has found the book to be very helpful.Several friends have recently been diagnosed with Type II diabetes and using the book have been able to manage their diets, eat some of their favorite foods and still not increase their sugar intake. All in all, although it says for SPECIAL KIDS, it is for everyone who needs to monitor their intake of certain kids of foods. It is, in the parlance of today's technology, user friedly.
