This book will change your life. I have used the information in this book to change my life and those around me. The ideas and information presented about the relationship between behaviors and consequence is game changing. Its application is useful in any scenario. With it I have been able to change my life, my workplace, and even my mother who has custody of my nieces life. When you understand what drives a behavior and how you can make the behavior you desire consistent you have true and powerful knowledge. If you are a parent, manager, supervisor, business owner, or anyone who wants or need to know how to better communicate and create consistent behavior or results this book is for you. Read it then re-read it and take notes both times. You wont regret it!
I read this book many years ago, early in my career, and found it an excellent, practical and useful guide to leadership and personnel management. The tips from this book served as the foundation for many successes based on the concepts provided. Now, years later in retirement, and also having authored several of my own leadership books, I often recommend this book to those I career coach and mentor. In fact, seeing that this book has been updated, I downloaded the digital version and re-read the whole book one more time. I also browsed through his book that I also purchased years ago, "Other People's Habits," and loved it one more time.
I love this book because it explains the WHY behind good management. I know what happens when I use positive, immediate consequences, and I see what happens if I use threats or positional authority. This book explains the science of why different consequences provide different results. It also explains the power of discretionary effort. There are so many books that explain techniques. This book goes far beyond those as it describes the principles underlying all techniques. Once you understand the principles it is easy to understand why some things work and others fail miserably. Very good book. The biggest trouble you will have is deciding where to start in the application of the science. There are so many processes that can be improved.
I am a fan of Aubrey’s Oops! book and decided to read this. Although it definitely has good information it’s about 30% too long with unnecessary chapters and mightily redundant at times. Last, as a proofing note he should replace the overuse of “Because†with “Since†when opening a sentence or other declarative that isn’t answering a question.
Very interesting read. Not finished with it yet and will re-read it. Was given a hard copy by my company (as I am classified as a supervisor) and purchased the Kindle version so I wouldn't have to carry the hard copy around. The author talks about the different types of reinforcement and how doing nothing can cause as much damage as doing the wrong thing. Look forward to finishing and learning from this book. I would also recommend'Turn the Ship Around'. It would be a companion to this one when your finished. And if you like me 'Exercise Change' is a good book on what it takes to make changes in your life.
If you want to manage others or yourself, this book will help you to bring out the best results. No tricks, no gimmicks, just aboard science principles. You'll be glad you skipped the face and unfounded theories.
As a student of applied behaviorism, all of Daniels' techniques are spot on. The book was refreshing and contains great, applicable context within which to apply positive reinforcement to bring out the best in people.
Bought go the library at our office to assist the personnel in dealing with problems which were occurring in the plant. But they will have to read them to gather the knowledge on how to handle the plant folks.
