Genevieve is experiencing her greatest challenge to date. This story starts out fairly calm but soon becomes very involved. This story branches out into so many different avenues, that at times, it does become confusing. What is not confusing, is that Genevieve and her team are once again in danger. New characters and friends, such as Bree, only deepens the friends link to this group. Tiny punk, Eric remains a favorite....he loves dodgee! (Explained in the book). The closeness of Genevieve and her team deepens with each case. She has come so far, yet still doubts herself as a friend. She is challenged to the very brink of her abilities to cope. This story builds to a very surprising and challenging climax.Very involved and sometimes overwhelming. Towards the end, the story seemed like almost too much going on at once.Genevieve remains so unique, and one of my most favorite people! I will continue to collect her books because she is truly amazing. Thank you for an exciting series.
In this book, the 13th of the series, the author introduces us to a transgender character, another artist's beautiful works, the city of Prague in the Czech Republic, the torture and death of a respectable scientist, the opiod crisis, Fentanyl and it's siblings, and the crazed killer left over from the last book. Once again, our heroine Genevieve is forced by circumstances to exceed the limits of her very intelligent but autistic brain. There is also a lot in this book about Artificial Intelligence and all it's many ramifications. The explanations for these things are put in language that any of us can understand, a wonderful feat in itself. Ms. Ryan has the ability to take complicated, deep subjects and explain them to the rest of us in terms we can comprehend. I tore my way through the story, unable to stop reading for more than an hour or two before I had to get back to it. It was actually painful to stop reading, even to eat. Bravo, Ms. Ryan!
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Our favorite characters are back in a tense, fast paced race to stop a terrorist who's preferred method to get what he wants is torture. We visit another European city and the author's spot on descriptions have us feeling as if we're there. New characters are introduced - another one I hope to see in a future book - and, along with an interesting art lesson, we're ready to chase this terrorist. One thing I love is that the author doesn't shy away from writing the character of Genevieve true to form even when we, the readers, can find her exasperating or frustrating (i.e. another blackout or the "no kisses" mantra for Eric). Indeed, it often amps up the tension and helps us to better understand her, her form of autism and to empathize with what she experiences. I'm amazed that 13 books in the series is not only maintaining the standards set by the first book, but consistently exceeding them.
I love it when I see Estelle Ryan's name popup in my inbox. Because it means I get to spend some quality time with Genevieve and the rest of the gang. This isn't your normal investigation group and they don't investigate your run of the mill crimes. Each book is new, exciting, and more enjoyable that the previous. For me,personally, the artist information and details about each period are a huge enjoyment. It has restored my love of art, a love that was basically destroyed by a droning, monotone, professor in Art History 101 in college.
Another excellent book by Estelle Ryan. Genevieve is the perfect imperfect heroine. A woman with some form of autism who grows stronger in each book by pushing her limits with help of an unlikely set of friends. I can not recommend these books too highly. I own them all and eagerly wait for each new installment.Unlike some books, these are an excellent reread. I find something new each time I settle in for a couple days with my personal hero, Genevieve. We gave adopted several children with different abilities and issues. Genevieve gives me hope for the future of some of my children as they grow and run into situations difficult to face when your brain just doesn't quite work like the average persons.
If you have not yet, start at the beginning and enjoy every delicious book in theseries so far.And "Sarini" does not disappoint. It still has the odd group of people whom Genevieve, andwe, have learned to enjoy as family. And Ryan introduces a new fascinating character, Bree.Taking place in the beautiful city of Prague, the story rushes ahead at a clip that only Estelle Ryanseems able to maintain while also including much of the beautiful city spaces she includes as backdropin all the books.Estelle Ryan has maintained an extremely high level of believability in all her books, something that cannotoften be said of many other series writers.
I have bought and read every one of the books in this series, and enjoyed all of them... up until this one.It had some high points - glimpses of a toddler Eric and an amazingly tense, taut climactic scene at the end. I will give it three stars for that. But it felt very much like "oh, I haven't had one of these yet, so I need to include a person of that persuasion in", when it came to the new character introduced. It didn't add anything to the plot, save for giving the author a chance to expound her personal views through her characters. completely breaking the fourth wall. And, seriously, given Francine's background and who her parents are, it's a bit hard to swallow that she would be the outspoken defender of all things PC... but okay.I might reread the end scene, because it was that good. But I doubt I'll reread the rest... and usually when I buy a book by a favorite author, I'll read and reread and rereread. So, that's my take, FWIW.
