I live in north Orange County, California, about 2-4 hours from the Santa Barbara Region, Ventura, Southern Kern, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo, the scope of Lentz' work, but with her vivid prose, I am inspired to spend time there. I have been to Mt. Pinos in Ventura County, and her observations are spot on. I plan to do more hiking and recreation in the area in the future. The book contains a very wide scope of information, from offshore Channel Islands to coast to high mountain ridges and the arid valleys at the north portion of the area, and all the nooks and crannies in between. She includes plant and animal life, geology, geography, urban-wilderness interface, and such topics Yet, with such a huge milieu of information, I never feel overloaded with useless information. She puts her soul into this book, and it is inspiring She writes as a naturalist, but with her use of language, she is accessible to anyone, from novice to expert, and is also interesting to both. I totally love her "Nature Journals" in each chapter. In these, she poetically relays her experiences on the trails, from when she was a child to recent dates. In her chapter about exploring nature in your backyard or city, she places importance of seeing the smaller details and inner-workings of nature, like how ants form trails to food, and the roles of earthworms in the soil of your turf/garden. Also, there are great, vivid, color photos in each topic that truly highlight the wonders of Southern California's varied lansdcape. Her work is truly inspiring, and as such, I very highly recommend this book.

Joan Easton Lentz's magnum opus deserves wide attention. Not only is it comprehensive, well illustrated and beautifully presented by Heyday Press, it is a superb example of personal nature writing. The author's enthusiasm, expertise, authenticity and style struck me the same as when I first read W.H.Hudson and Gilbert White. She is a life-long resident of Santa Barbara and a life-long nature student, teacher and writer, and all this shows. I predict that from now on the Lentz name will be linked with the natural history of the Santa Barbara region and the best of nature writing.

The binding adhesive was not applied adequately, or is of poor quality. Otherwise the book is as advertised and will be helpful in my class. I plan on purchasing a tube of book binding glue from a local craft store to fix the binding.

Super comprehensive with fantastic photos and descriptions!

This is a wonderful book. The writing is clear and entertaining. Both common and scientific names of species are included, and the scientific names are accurate and up to date. The nature journal sections really add to the book. Photographs are superb. I recommend this book to anyone interested in natural history in southern California. Despite the book's title the book has information that applies from southern California to the central coast of California.

Living in Santa Barbara, it is so easy to take for granted it's beauty and climate. But, Joan Lentz, with her absolute love for this region, takes your hand and introduces you to a multitude of treasures with care and great detail. It is a real treat to discover new and exciting information about the area, even after living here for over 45 years! Thank you Joan!

This thorough, detailed and expansive presentation of natural Santa Barbara is a gem. It is also a beautiful book - full of pictures and maps that bring the topics and area to life. You will treasure this book.
