When I picked up this book I had no idea I'd be unable to put it down. This is not the Shakespeare we learned about in high school. This is a love story, a tragedy, a comedy and everything in between. Reading the Bard's own words and thoughts in these letters is fascinating. Not only can I see the origins of all his great works, but his personality comes through in a remarkable way. Equally compelling is the author's story of how he came to find these letters! A modern-day mystery that takes the reader to the walls of Buckingham Palace. Highly recommend this read!
This book is an astonishing creation whether it be a magnificent forgery or letters actually written by William Shakespeare. The discovery of these letters is explained well in the prologue, and the story is consistent and plausible. Events described in the letters correspond with known history; the letters are themselves works of literature nearly on a level with the plays written later; and as Terry Tamminen indicates in the prologue, a detailed analytic comparison of one of these works with known writings of Shakespeare is consistent. If the letters are authentic, then they represent a magnificent window into a missing period in Shakespeare’s life and hint at how some of his later writings evolved during the time between leaving Stratford and the writing of Titus Andronicus. If the letters are a forgery, the author was an outstanding writer, was familiar with London of Elizabethan times; carefully created the letters to preface later known writings of Shakespeare; and then must have spent at least a year, perhaps two, in crafting these letters and then somehow arranging that they might be “discovered.†If the letters are a modern forgery, the author was a brilliant scholar. If the letters were a forgery from centuries past, the author could never know if whether they might, or might not, be found. Either way it is difficult to imagine anyone making such an effort to write ninety-six of these documents. Future archival research may be able to verify or refute some details that appear in the letters, and it is possible that the actual documents, which Terry Tamminen copied but was not permitted to keep, will be found and studied. Someone, somewhere knows of these materials and is keeping the secret. Until more evidence appears, this book and its promised sequel are a mystery that must be read by anyone who has ever marveled at the brilliance of Shakespeare’s writing
I LOVED this book. The writing is magnificent - I was transported from the very first page. I could imagine all the writer describes and was thrust into Shakespeare's intimate world. Not only was I thoroughly entertained I learned so, so much - it was a graduate class in Shakespeare but also in history. This is a must read and a brilliant piece of writing!
It is a great adaptation to familiarize oneself with WS’s 🌎. 4 billion copies to be sold !Thank you Terry Tamminen
I was provided with a complimentary e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a fascinating project. I perhaps should announce an interest up front, in that I am a Shakespeare fan – I even performed in a few of his plays myself as an amateur. And a fan not only of the plays but also of his life and times. How you receive this book may depend on whether you believe that these are lost letters, written by Shakespeare. Other reviewers say that they don’t care if the letters are genuine or not, and have found this book a way into Shakespeare and his language – and that is something that can only be applauded. Which I do. The book is well written, with a few odd spellings perhaps unavoidable when an American takes on Elizabethan English. Either Shakespeare or his editor, Tamminen, is very fond of commas, which bespatter some of the longer sentences to the point where one has negotiate stepping stones of phrases and sub-clauses. The preamble to the book, dealing with how the lost letters came into the author’s possession, is very interesting and gambols along. The illustrations, glossary and dramatis personae of Shakespeare’s life are a helpful support to the letters. Of the letters themselves, much is promised and, indeed, much is delivered. There are 16 letters, each prefaced, engagingly, by Tamminen. All the letters are long. To the extent that this is a book of 546 pages. One wonders where on earth Shakespeare found the time and writing perquisites to write at such length. Lack of television was, presumably, key… This reviewer found some of the material (whisper it soft) a little dull. There is no plot of course - no beginning, middle and end. This is not a novel. Nor is it a play (which is how we are most used to experiencing Shakespeare). Life happens and is relayed to Shakespeare’s ‘coz’, and thence to us, in these 16 epistles. As Elizabethan English never uses a short phrase where a long one will serve, it is perhaps unsurprising that there could be longeurs. This is a first tranche of the letter cache: more volumes are promised. What is in this book covers three years between 1586 and 1589: Shakespeare has written a few sonnets but has not yet written a play, although he has doctored several. To escape problems at home in Stratford, he joins a band of travelling actors (‘Leicester’s Men) as their Jack of all trades and over the course of these early letters becomes interested in acting as a profession for himself. He discusses the times: amongst other things the necessity to be seen to espouse the right religion and the prevalence of plague in town and countryside. A wild scheme to make money and pay off his father’s debts is a running thread through the letters. He falls in love and berates himself for cheating on his wife and children. There is an intriguing revelation about why he married Anne Hathaway. The letters add to what is known of Shakespeare’s life, filling in a number of the well-publicised gaps in his life story, and prefiguring material in sonnets and plays to come when Shakespeare hits his writing stride. Is it true? Read it and make up your own mind.
Wow, who knew Shakespeare could be such fun to read? Maybe you, like me, have a distant memory of reading or performing in a Shakespeare play decades ago in school because it was required. This book turns those dusty notions of obligatory Shakespeare assignments on its head! The depth of love, family conflicts, dark secrets, explorer's stories, palace intrigue and so much more make this a real page turner. These 16 letters are not only fascinating, but easy to read and understand, so even if you did not enjoy Shakespeare years ago in school, you will now! Starting with a young Shakespeare leaving home, wife and kids, to seek his fortune (and escape problems at home) to experiencing true love, loss and ultimately success in the cutthroat world of the stage; there are universal themes everyone can relate to and enjoy reading. Highly recommend! And when you get your own copy, order some for the high school and college students in your family who will discover Shakespeare in a most delightful way!
